Lark

The next month flies by in a haze of happiness I never thought was possible. Our weekdays are full of stolen kisses at the coffee shop and chatting on the phone for hours every night. Our weekends are full of romantic outings throughout the town and we eventually make our way back to Rowan’s place, ending the night with orgasms.

So. Many. Orgasms!!

Sometimes I question my sanity as to why I wasted so much time on boys my own age when the secret to pure bliss was an older man. Not only does he know his way around the bedroom, the kitchen, the dining room, and in the shower… but he makes me feel whole. Like he is a piece of my puzzle that I didn’t even know I was missing.

Sadie has been begging me for weeks to meet the elusive Rowan Briggs. I accidentally let it slip while talking with Rowan one night that she had asked me to come over on Friday for a family dinner. Rowan, the ever-supportive man he is, encouraged me to attend; but I corrected him that the invite was for both of us, clearly not thinking that he would be all too eager to accept.

So here we are, sitting in Rowan’s truck with the ignition off, in my sister’s driveway. I take deep breaths, one after another, willing myself to just get out of the vehicle.

“Are you ready, Cherry?” Rowan asks me as he places one of his hands on my thigh and gives it a gentle squeeze.

I can feel the word vomit form in my throat and I can’t stop it from escaping. “What if she doesn’t like you? And why did she have to invite my grandparents? She knew I wouldn’t have said yes if I knew they were coming! I’m certain my grandmother is going to love you—my grandfather is a hard nut to crack though. What if she tells embarrassing stories about my childhood?!” I can feel the panic attack coming as I turn in my seat to face him, needing the reassurance that only he can provide.

He grabs my face between his large hands and leans toward me so that our foreheads are resting against each other, keeping his eyes on mine. “Lark, I’ve got you.” He drops a quick kiss to the tip of my nose before pulling away.

I feel the tension leaving my body, the panic and anxiety slipping away. I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding and a smile easily falls into place.

I don’t know how he does it, but Rowan is the only person who has both been able to set my soul on fire and soothe the burn within me.

“Okay. Let’s go,” I say to him.

He quickly hops out of his side of the truck and rushes around to my side, opening the door and offering me his hand to help me out with a sly smirk of his own. “I didn’t want you to change your mind, Cherry.”
